| Research and development laboratory |
In the research and development laboratory, new ingredients are evaluated and formulas are studied.
Product stability is also checked, along with its safety in use, new packaging materials and their suitability for the product.
The formulas are characterized in their main chemical and physical parameters: density, viscosity, pH, refractive index.
They are also put under both mechanical and thermodynamic stress (in a centrifuge, at high and low temperatures or following repeated exposition to UV light) to determine their chemical and microbiological stability. |
The formulas are then sent to a certification and analysis centre that works with accredited dermatological clinics to evaluate skin compatibility (patch test). |

| Production and packaging |
The ingredients are stored in air-conditioned rooms and are dosed and worked on in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
The analysis certificates and technical and safety data sheets of each new batch are checked. |
Quality control is carried out on the ingredients to check some of their parameters (for example: bacterial count, refractive index, state of conservation, GC-MS analysis).
The products are prepared using special stainless steel AISI 316L vacuum-sealed turboemulsors with dual inter-space (with roughness guaranteed on the parts in contact <0.3µm) which operate with autoclave pressurization (up to 0.5/1bar).
The temperature, homogenization level and homogenization and mixing times are controlled on an electronic panel.
Conformity to chemical and physical parameters is assessed on the bulk product: specific weight, pH, viscosity and refractive index. The values are recorded on each product's technical data sheet.
Once the product's chemical and physical conformity has been confirmed, the product is packaged and packed in bulk. The batch is then stored in air-conditioned rooms, awaiting microbiological conformity. |
A number of significant samples are taken from each batch of finished product (as per the guidelines to microbiological analysis in the cosmetic industry) and sent to the laboratory where their microbiological parameters are analysed. Once conformity has been confirmed (total bacterial count, moulds and ferments), the batch is packed up and sent to the storage warehouse. |
| The laboratory for efficacy and compatibility evaluation |
The main skin parameters are tested in this laboratory.
The formulas are tested on at least 20 subjects, using special instrumentation with non-invasive probes.
First, the skin's compatibility is examined by monitoring its characteristic parameters and its condition, such as pH, hydration and temperature. Claims such as ‘gentle cleansing', ‘frequent use' and ‘for sensitive skin' can all be checked at this preliminary stage.
Depending on the individual formulas or a customer's specific request, the following can also be assessed: moisturising, nourishing and toning properties, elasticity, a product's ability to reduce or normalize sebaceous secretion.
How effective a product is in bringing out the skin's colour or making it lighter, can also be tested in relation to the increase or decrease of melanin, using a special programme that also provides details of the subject's phototype.
The laboratory is also equipped with an infrared instrument that measures changes in the skin's microcirculation and that can relate these changes to the degree of cellulite and water retention. This test is essential when evaluating the efficacy of treatments for skin blemishes caused by cellulite and localized adiposity. |
| Quality assurance |
Gala's Quality Assurance department is responsible for guaranteeing the quality of its finished products by monitoring every stage of production: from the arrival of the raw materials and packaging, to the chemical, physical and microbiological controls, concluding with an evaluation of the skin test and the efficacy of the finished product.
Raw materials and packaging materials undergo a series of standard analyses and checks, microbiological analyses and specific analyses depending on their type and criticality. |
The finished products are tested in Gala's laboratory to evaluate efficacy and by external clinics and universities, in order to certify their skin compatibility and efficacy. |
The quality control of the raw materials, the production process and the finished product is carried out and recorded in compliance with strict internal procedures that are set out in Gala's quality manual.
The constant monitoring of the processes (from the creation of the formula to the prototype, from the pilot test to production) enables Gala to keep all the formula stages under control. It also means the staff can intervene promptly to take preventative or corrective action to ensure the company's performance goes from strength to strength. |
